OK, I've got a ways to go before 2000, (like 1000 and 1500 success first) but I'm on the right track with this outfit.

Some particulars :

  • 36" straight taper, ss Lilja
  • Remington 700 action blueprinted
  • custom muzzle brake made of Lilja barrel stock
  • teflon coated action, barrel, brake
  • 11" aluminum v-block
  • ss 20x42mm scope w/ mil dot reticle, Scope Level
  • McMillian weighted at 15# from the factory
  • Rifle Basix trigger (set light !!!)
  • Machined bolt face fitted w/ Sako type extactor
  • one-piece tapered Leupold Base, Burris Signature Rings w/ moa inserts

This rifle has been throated so that the 300 gr. Wildcats can be seated long in anticipation of a 350 gr. offering that is still in the works.  It weighs in at 31 1/2 lbs.  Fired the first loads through it this afternoon and felt recoil's less then my .223 .  Once again, 50's did a spectacular job.  Now begins the fireforming and barrel break-in process.  Needless to say, I'm very much looking forward to this summers varmint season.

Looks AWESOME!!!  BTW, what is a .338 Kubla Kahn?  My guess is a 2-liter coke bottle necked down to .33.  Am I close ?

LOL     .  Not quite 2-liter size.  The Kahn uses the .338-378 WbyMag case as it's parent.  Blows out the double radius shoulder to a more conventional sharp angle & moves it forward a touch.

Should be a fun one to work with !!!  Chat with ya later.  >>  klallen

Hi Ron  >>  Thanks.  Pretty proud of this rifle.  I wanted something put together that'd gave me the best chance of meeting the VHA downrange club requirements.  This should do it.  Gonna head up today and get 50 loads ready for fireforming.  I'll break in the barrel with these and then start development.  Wouldn't mind seeing 3100 fps with that 300 gr. Wildcat ULD.  Will post data as it comes available.  Hope all's well with the family.  Chat with ya later.  >>  korey

Now, just out of curiousity, why did you choose standard Leupy bases/Burris rings as opposed to say a Badger 20 MOA base and rings with inserts? Wouldn't that give you that extra elevation you must need for 4/5 of a mile?

Hi TIKKA.  Hope all's going well.  And hoping this rifle will be "bad" on the rockchucks as well.

NH, reconfirmed that the tapered Leupold base we got gives 20MOA.  With the inserts used in the Burris Signature rings, that's another 10MOA, or so.  Add these to the adjustments the SS scope has and simply reaching in excess of 2000 yds. will be easy.  Actually hitting something at that range, that's another story yet to be written.

Chat with you fellas later.  >>  klallen

Kallen that is one heck of a ground squirrel gun! MERCY!!!

I am affraid I would have to hire me a gun bearer for totin the rascal around or just maybe set up a bench in the back of a new pickup truck Mama says I don't need. LOL.

It sure is a mighty nice looking rifle. I have one something close in caliber for long range elk hunting but it has no muzzle brake on it and it weighs in at 11 pounds. Needless to say the recoil is a bit of a jolt on one's upper torso.

Thanks 6BITS.  Sounds like your elk catcher's a thumper.  I really like how Holland muzzle brakes manage the recoil of my harder hitting big game rifles.  Any more, I have one installed on all things that have an uncomfortable zing to it.

Worked up my fireforming loads yesterday.  COL with the 300 gr. Sierra MK is 4.060" seated just off then lands.  With the slight difference in nose profile of the 300 gr. Wildcat ULD, COL should be around 4.090" to the lands.  Middle one's a factory case ready to fire.  Left one's finished product with the 35* conventional shoulder.  Right one's my favorite (did I say that   ) .270 Win. handload for perspective :

nice on all counts klallen. i really could learn to like that integrated muzzle brake for sheer ingenuity. gotta wonder, though, is it really necessary on a 31.5 pound rifle, or is it just extra insurance against upsetting the bags?

i like the looks of the finished round... much cleaner than the wby-look. i'd even say it looks mean!

any chance at a better pic of the stock? which mcm stock is that, by the way? was thinking it was an a-2...?

Hey DAKOTA  >>  Thanks.

On the brake issue, I don't think it'd be needed from a comfort standpoint, necessarily.  I like it moreso to keep the gun in position after trigger pull.  As you're well aware, it don't take much to pull ya off target and if that target's 1000+ yds. out there, I don't want to spend any time having to reaquire it.  I want to be right there for a quick second shot opportunity.  On a much lesser point, I'm not going to lie to ya, appearance wise, I think a brake on the end of a big gun looks good.  This 1.350" diameter straight barrel'd have a very different look to it (and the overall appearance of the gun) if the brake was not there.  It looks right to me for some reason.

I also like what the fireforming does to the WBY case.  I've never been a fan of that double radius thing so any steps taken to get rid of that is a positive in my opinion.

The stock is their Tooley MBR.  Nice, wide 3" forend that settles perfectly in the rest and 14 1/2" LOP.  Rifle is up at the shop now.  I'll get some other pics of it today and post tonight.

Take care.  >>  klallen

That rifle must leave you smiling with each pull of the trigger.

Like Dakota said, the formed case looks so much better than the original.  Looks like it means business.

You know don't you, that since you said it recoils like a 223 we all want to come over and shoot it...get those rounds loaded up.

Looking foreward to how she does for you in the field.

One thing to keep in mind is, that the more shots it takes to tune a load to the barrel, the shorter the barrel life. A rifle such as this, with this horsepower, would only need around 5000 shots before the reamer needs reinserted. Of course, there isn't much overbore to worry about, heat and gasses will flush the the leads in short order. Just a point that I hope you're considering.................Kingpin

All Smiles, GR !!!

As per DAKOTA's request, more stock pics :

Tried to get a couple angles.  If more desired, just let me know.  And more on that recoil think.  Rather then fiddle-fart with the brake with all the barrel scrubbing during break-in, I removed it for the process and subsequent shots taken.  It is very comfortable to shoot but it does rock you with a gentle push.  Once 31+ lbs. of gun gets moving back at ya, I does take a bit to stop it.  So that field-confirms what I was saying earlier with the brake not being used for comfort but having everything to do with staying on target.  You would definitely loose target without it and at extreme range, that's not what I was looking for.

Point considered, KP.

Session was cut short yesterday by a loving wife needing attention so should have another couple hours to finish breaking the barrel in then I can get something meaningful posted with regards to load development.  Chat with you fellas later.  >>  klallen

Hi Rod.  Thanks, bud.  Good to see ya got your old call-name back.  BEARHUNTER's how it should be.  Been a while coming to get this thing home but the wait's been more then worth it.  Take care.

Mr. Marcus, how's balmy BC?  Took a little trip across the boarder a couple weeks ago and spent the weekend in Calgary.  Had fun.   The zoo, olympic park, banff, shopping (the wife, primarily).  Met lots of nice folks up there.  Just a small cross-section of the country for sure, but all in all, I was impressed.  Except for that darn metric system ya got going.  I'll need to make several more trips across the line before I ever get used to that  .  I see MAX 100 on speed limit signs and am ready to open things up as the wife calmly reminds me just how fast I need to be going    .  I am happy to report no run in's with the law so I musta toed the straight'n narrow pretty well.

i'm liking that stock, and the colors work well w/ the black gun. any idea how it compares to the a-series stocks? why did you pick the tooley over an a-2, 3, or 4?

recoil pad... 14.5" lop is pretty long - at least for me it would be. so is that black at the end of the stock spacers, or pad, or?

what really impresses me is that your paper ballistics indicate 21.5" holdover to reach 1000... could damn near set it to a 500 yard mid-point and kill w/ authority from muzzle to 1200 +/- and never click a turret. good stuff, and fantastic ballistics/chambering.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

No idea about the A- stocks.  I went with the Tooley because I'd had the opportunity to handle and shoot with one that 50 had used on one of his rifles.  I really liked it and after the frustrating fiasco with the laminated stock that I was originally going to use for the project, I figured I'd not waste any more time and go with what I should have ordered in the first place.  I wanted it big'n heavy, real stable in the bags and this stock seemed to be just about as big as they came, short of those dedicated for the BMG class cartridge.

When I first saw it, I thought, my lord, it's red.  More so then I thought it would be and with the SS barrel, it really stood out.  In efforts to bring out the darker maroon color, 50 suggested the teflon coating for everything metal.  It spruced everything up and I really like what it did to the colors of the stock.  The fella that did the coating somehow misplaced the recoil lug and found it after the process was done, sending everything back the beautiful black except the lug.  I didn't mind the look at all when I first saw the rifle together but was still considering having it sent back just to have everything a uniform color.  Not going to do it, though.  Once a load's developed, I'm certainly not going to have it taken apart for that little piece.

Those are spacers inserted for my desired LOP.  They'll set ya up with whatever you need.  Chat with ya later.  >>  klallen
